Jennifer de Guzman: Winner of the Women of Distinction Award, 2007

May 8th, 2008

To help spotlight our wonderful Award Winners from last year before handing their mantle to this year’s winners- we’re doing some interviews! Next up is the winner of the Women of Distinction Award for 2007- Jennifer de Guzman.

Remember to speak up for your favorite creator-
nominate them for a Lulu Award!

Tell us a little about how the last 12 months have been
for you!

Ohmygosh, busy. I finished getting my Master’s degree (an MFA literature and creative writing), and have tried to hunker down and do the working writer thing in addition to my job at SLG Publishing. I have a new column at Publishers Weekly Comics Week and a feature at Blog@Newsarama that’s a collaboration with my husband, artist Brian Belew.

In the office, my assistant who worked her for several years left, so I’ve been doing a lot of the nitty-gritty stuff myself, like laying out comics and sending out review copies.

Do you have any exciting projects that you’d like to
mention specifically?

We’re doing our second graphic novel with Faith Erin Hicks, The War at Ellsmere. She really skyrocketed after the publication of Zombies Calling last year, and it’s been one of our best-selling graphic novels lately. Ellsmere again focuses on female characters, this time freshmen at an elite girls’ boarding school. It deals with bullying and friendship and fostering your gifts. I was really excited when she pitched it because I’ve been thinking a girls’ boarding school comic would be great for a while now.

I’ve just been reviewing the proofs for a big new collection we’re doing of Andy Ristaino’s The Babysitter. It’s going to be a big book — 15 x 9″ — the kind of thing that’s an art object in itself as well as a comic. The Babysitter is a dense, dense work, and the huge size suits is. Andy did a lot of experimenting, and the comic and its art deal with claustrophobia and an imaginary Japanese society as created by the American perception of the country and its pop culture.

What comic work (by women) have you been reading lately, that you think our readers should look for, anything you’d like to spread the word on?
Jamaica Dyer is an artist I’ve known almost since I started working in comics, and I’ve been watching her work develop. She’s doing a web comic now called Weird Fishes that’s really lovely and magical and odd. www.jamaicad.com/comic/

What would you like to see happen in the comic industry in the next few years? In general, and with respect to the women who are a part of it?
Well, I don’t want to hear about “women in comics” panels at conventions where former porn stars only marginally involved in comics get prominent billing!

But on a more personal level, and I think this is already happening, I’d like to see the shift into graphic novels that’s going on now produce some really cool, long-format work by women comics creators. It’s all about making it so commonplace that no one takes women working in comics as anything but completely unsurprising.

Do you have any advice for women interested in getting involved with comics? Is there anything you wish you had known when you were first starting off that you’d like to
pass on?

So much of the comics community is about the online and at-convention gossip and commentary, and I’d say using this is a way to get heard and bring attention to your work as well. Don’t be afraid to have a big mouth if that’s how you’re inclined to be (as I am), but do put a lot of thought into what you say before you say it. Be selective about what you’re going to comment on and don’t get mired in pointless debate.

Surviving and doing well on the side of actually making and editing and publishing comics is just as much about work ethic as anything else. Just because it’s comics and can seem kind of cool sometimes doesn’t mean that it isn’t buckle-down-and-get-stuff-done at all times. Know what you’re supposed to be doing, and do that well and then do more.

Thanks so much, Ms. de Guzman!

The nominations for the Lulu Awards are open to non-members! Nominate here: http://www.friends-lulu.org/awards08nomform.php.

New Comics! May 7, 2008

May 6th, 2008

I don’t have a local comics shop that I can swing by on Wednesdays and pick up my comics for the week. No, I buy my comics online. They come in a big monthly bundle, delivered right to my door step. In fact, my order for April just shipped on Monday. Which makes this week’s comic list all the harder to read through. I won’t be seeing this week’s pick for another month, so nobody spoil it for me in the meantime, okay?

My pick for the week shows my true fangirl nature. After going back and forth, in and out of mainstream comics for a long time, last summer, I finally started reading a comic that got me back into the game for keeps. That comic was Captain America.

One of my absolute favorite things about the current run on Captain America is the World War II flashback sequences. We haven’t been getting as many of them as we did in the earlier issues, but those short little scenes made me fall in love with the heroes of that era, the Invaders. The heroes of that time seemed to be more… I don’t know. They were closer to what I think real superheroes would be like if they truly existed. The heroes currently running around in the Marvel universe are too hyped up for me. In this week’s Avengers Invaders #1, we get to see how those heroes or yore sync up with today’s world, and I’m willing to bet at least some amount of hilarity ensues as the boys from the 40’s face today’s technologies and heroes. There should also be a healthy amount of drama and navel gazing. Considering all but two of the Invaders are dead by the time the boys flash forward, with one dying very recently, there should be some questions about life, death, and whether or not you should change the future.

Early reviews for the first issue are mixed, and I honestly can’t recommend the title to anyone who isn’t already immersed in the Marvel universe since I’m not sure there will be enough there to full explain the situation to the non initiated. (Haha, get it? “Initiated?” ‘Cause it’s Marvel and they have that book called — … never mind.) But, for those who do have a feeling for the Marvel crew and are looking for some non-Skrully entertainment, Avengers Invaders is the book for you. And, if you like it, you have eleven more issues of the series to look forward to.

On the other hand, if you are in the mood for some Skrulls, check out the latest Franklin Richards book, “Not So Secret Invasion” which releases tomorrow as well. The book is all ages and if it’s anything like the previous Franklin books, would be a fun addition to anyone’s reading list.

The list of tomorrow’s new releases is provided by ComicsList.com.

Free Comic Book Day! May 3, 2008

May 2nd, 2008

There are so many great looking comics that are being made available for this year’s Free Comic Book Day. I’m not sure where to begin talking about them. I guess the most important item to cover is the fact that, as my mom would put it: Free Comic Book Day is a privilege, not a right. So remember, if you’re heading out tomorrow to get some free comics, please try to actually buy something from your local comic shop as well.

From the “gold” list of comics, comics that will be available at all participating stores while supplies last, there are such treats as Archie’s Pal Jughead and the Bongo Comics Free-For-All! which features both The Simpsons and Futurama comics. All Star Superman #1, a Transformers Animated comic and a sampler of Shonen Jump (but not Shojo Beat? c’mon!) magazine are also available.

On the limited availablity “silver” list is where things get really interesting, though. The full color Pocket Manga editions of Neotopia look like a great additions to your book shelf (the mere fact they are “books” and not “issues” is a big plus in my book). Tiny Titans #1 was lots of fun the first time around and the Free Comic Book Day edition allows the late comes to get in on the excitement. If Ducktales and its cast of characters were as big a part of your childhood as they were mine, then you’re sure to love Walt Disney’s Gyro Gearloose. Marvel’s Adventures line is a great way to get kids into comics without having to touch on some of the darker topics occurring in the regular titles. Robin Enrico: Joint Volunteer Award Winner 2007

May 2nd, 2008

Robin Enrico is a stellar guy, I know this personally after having worked with him on the Girls’ Guide to Guys’ Stuff. But let’s hear him talk about his efforts on that front which are what earned he and MK Reed the Lulu Volunteer of the Year Award from the Board of Directors in his own words!

You two worked hard for this award, which was for (in addition to your other volunteer work) producing the Girls’ Guide to Guys’ Stuff anthology what was it you did to make that happen, from start to finish?

The Girls’ Guide? Ha ha. Well, what seems like forever ago Dave Roman (who had done the last anthology Broad Appeal) approached MK [Reed] to edit what became The Girl’s Guide. And basically since her and I had worked together on so many projects together over the years, she called me in to help her.

We started by putting together a list of female cartoonists. I think we came up with like 50 to 100 names, and mind you this is back in like 2005, so I am sure we could make an even longer list now. We did a lot of contacting the people we WANTED in the book first. This was kind of arrogant of us. We assumed we could just get work from all sorts of awesome cartoonists. Of course most of them we’re already busy doing their own work so for awhile we floundered around trying to figure out how to fill the book. It wasn’t until we started doing open submissions that the book really started to come together. I mean we were shocked SHOCKED at how much good work come in. Plus, we were able to get most of the younger less established artists we wanted in the book. I mean we got a Hellen Jo comic, that’s always a coup in my book. After that was many months of freaking out trying to organize and layout the book. Pick the order of the pieces, go back and forth with the artist to get them to make corrections, determine which pieces to drop etc. Which was only half of our worries because then we had to scrounge up money to print the book and deal with getting it professionally printed. Something MK and I had never done. Plus, we pushed to get out in time for SDCC, which we did, but yeah, getting that book done shot most of my summer back in 2007.

Any special moments along the way that you loved, or learned something valuable from, or were really proud of yourself for accomplishing?

Umm. We got the book done. There were many times back in like 2005/ 2006 when MK and I would look at each other and be like, “what are we doing about the Lulu book?” Which just resulted in collective groan city. And like I said once we HAD the material to make the book it was punch-time crunch-time to get it done. But I think the best moment was again going back to Hellen, when we got her comic. We ended up putting it first in the book because it was exactly the kind of comic we wanted for the book. Honestly so many of the comics really came through in this regard, but with hers it was just like “this is one we gotta lead off with.”

What has been the feedback you’ve received from your work on the Girls’ Guide to Guys’ Stuff?

You know I haven’t heard much feed back about the book. I think by the time it was done I totally forgot we had to promote it. But maybe you should ask MK about that. I mean people I know who have read it have liked it. Some folks get all bent out of shape about the title of the book and what not. But come one people it’s a comics anthology meant to entertain people and showcase some awesome lady cartoonists. Let’s not turn this into a debate on gender inequality or something.

What will you do differently, for next time?

Open submission right away! I can’t stress that enough there are SO MANY awesome female cartoonists dying for the chance to get into print. Most of which you’d never know about. Like some of the best stuff we got was from girls from like Norway or the Netherlands. How would we have ever known they were out there if we hadn’t made public that we were looking for work for this anthology all over the internet. BTW much thanks to any website that helped us out there (Heidi at the Beat I am most definitely looking in your direction).

What has the last 12 months been like for you, have there been a lot of changes? Any special accomplishments you’d like to relate to us?

The last 12 months have been awesome for me comics-wise. Other than putting out the Girls Gudie last summer; I was featured on IFC’s Comic Con Chronicles 2007 TV special, which I also did a promotional comic for. Both of which can be seen on my website. I was recently interviewed by the online portion of the New York Daily News, which can be seen here. And this summer at MoCCA [Artfest] I will be releasing the first volume of my graphic novel series Jam in the Band which is a really huge deal for me as I have been working on this book for the last 2 years. I honestly could not be more excited for my future in comics right now.

Do you have any words of wisdom for Friends of Lulu members out there that might be considering a similar project to this one?

Eh you know my whole mantra. Just [expletive deleted, sorry Robin] do it, make it happen. And look, look what happened with Raina Telgemeier after she was in Broad Appeal. Someone read that and now she draws the Baby Sitters Club graphic novels. Does she deserve it? Of course she does. So when we did The Girl’s Guide to Guys’ Stuff that was our main thing. We wanted someone else, some other amazingly talented female cartoonist to get the chance to be in print, get discovered by a larger audience and get the chance to shine even brighter. I really can’t think of a better thing to do in terms of promoting women in comics.

Thank you, Robin!

Remember there is still time to nominate your favorite female creator, go to our online nomination form at http://www.friends-lulu.org/awards08nomform.php!

New Comics! April 30, 2008

April 30th, 2008

If I could only buy one book this week, I think it would be Amaze Ink/Slave Labor Graphics’ Wonderland #6. How this beautiful little book has managed to slip under my radar for five issue is beyond me (actually, it might have to so with scheduling — the first issue came out when?), but the moment I was the cover of this issue, I knew I would be hooked.

Now, the market seems to be saturated with Alice in Wonderland inspired comics as of late, so why buy this book versus others? First, it’s not a straight adaptation. I have a little bit of a pet peeve with comic adaptations of existing work, particularly written works. If you’re reading the adaptation because you’re a fan of the original work, that’s fine; but if you’re reading it as a replacement for the original, that’s a big no-no. Get the real thing and read it. Second, the story and art are both great. I’m particularly in love with artist Sonny Liew’s story book style. And, writer Tommy Kovac has managed to pick up on a few little details of the original Wonderland tale — as told by Disney — and make them into something wholly his own. Third, this really doesn’t have much to do with this issue really, but if you check the book out at the comic shop and it looks appealing, but you’re not sure if you want to spend all that time tracking down back issues, you’re in luck. A hardcover edition of the series is being released in July.

Rachel Nabors: Kim Yale Award Winner 2007

April 28th, 2008

To help spotlight our wonderful Award Winners from last year before handing their mantle to this year’s winners- we’re doing some interviews! First up is the winner of the Kim Yale Award for Best New Female Talent of 2007- Rachel Nabors.

Remember to speak up for your favorite creator-
nominate them for a Lulu Award!

Rachel Nabors Acceptance Comic

It’s been a rock-and-roll year for you, Rachel! Care to tell us
a little bit about what the past 12 months have held for you?

My goodness, it has been a busy year! I did a weekly comic on iVillage’s gURL.com, started a new life living on my own in a little city, won your Kim Yale Award for Best New Female Talent (thank you, everyone who voted for me! I love you!), fell in love, got engaged, moved again. And my jaw. I need between $15-25,000 worth of orthognathic surgery to correct a crossbite that is slowly wearing away my jaw. I was surprised when friends, readers, and comickers rallied to help me raise the cash. We’re over $7,000 so far! It’s so heartwarming to meet so many people and others who’ve been through this. It’s really given me faith in humans as individuals again, even if as a society we have shortcomings.

I have met so many people and had so many first-time experiences, I keep waiting for it all to slow down! But I get the feeling that life is like a carousel. As it speeds up, you feel a little sick from all the motion, and once it gets going, it keeps flying round and round. But by the time it slows down, you don’t want it to stop.

We at Friends of Lulu had a delay in getting your physical award to you- our apologies! Has being the Kim Yale award winner helped you get any recognition, besides this setback of no plaque to put on your table?

It helps me connect more with editors and creators unfamiliar with my work. There’s this glint of recognition if the award comes up. But I think mainly, to me, it is more that I feel recognized by my readers and the female side of the comic industry. It’s an indelible confirmation that, yes, people are reading, and yes, what I made is good enough to get a (very nice!) award. So now I can’t mope about about how nobody gives me any credit and blah blah, because if I do, someone will hit me on the back of my head and say, “You won an award! What more do you want? A national holiday?” So I can’t whine like I used to anymore. I have to say things like, “I am an award winning comics creator.” You try saying that after years of, “Oh, I like to draw…” It’s hard! And of course, it sounds great at cocktail parties and on resumes.

How do you feel your comic storytelling has improved
over the past year, can you note any specific influences in
terms of art or writing style that have particularly inspired you? How has that inspiration surfaced in your work?

Most of my changes in storytelling have shown up in side-projects, which you will see more of in the coming years. But in the comics I’ve made for gURL.com, I feel that I’ve moved from a social commentary to a more character-driven plot, sort of like how Sex and the City stopped being one girl’s observations on sex and started being a drama revolving around her love life. (Only I like to think my protagonist is a better role model than Carrie Bradshaw.) I started trying to show the story from more than one vantage point, to give my characters more dimension and show why they behave the way they do.

I, as always, don’t really have a major artistic influence. I’ve been reading a lot of Junko Mizuno’s work and Penny and Aggie, but I wouldn’t say I’ve gone out of my way to emulate either. In the future, though, keep an eye out for art nouveau influences. I can’t get over Mucha’s art, and I am determined to try my hand at that particular style.

Your relationship with comics has changed a bit, you’re moving from a weekly comic for gURL.com on to other things- what’s in store for you next?

I’ll be restarting as a bi-monthly comic for gURL.com if all goes well after this much needed respite.

I’m also working on a by/for/about women comics portal/banner exchange. The girls’ comics banner exchange I am running at SubcultureofOne.com/clique keeps crashing my site with all its traffic, so it’s time to take things to the next level.

I want to finish publishing all my gURL comics as minis. I’m working on getting wider distribution through a chain of music stores, and I always say comics and music go together like ice cream and warm pie.

I am also involved in a Shakespearean project with another award winning comics creator. We’re both very excited, and I’m hoping that now I’ll have the time to devote to this and other projects that I’ve been keeping on the back burner far too long.

Lastly, I’ve started a series of monster fairytales that I would like to publish in a small, illustrated children’s book.

As you can see, my plate is very much still full!

Is there anything in particular you’d like to mention
that we haven’t covered? Words of wisdom for other potential
Kim Yale Award winners, or prospective comic creators?

Love your readers and your fans. They love you. Try to reply to every one of their emails, even if you end up with a backlog.

Get a myspace, a facebook, and a newsletter. If you’re a girl, get a livejournal, too. Most of the female comicking community is still on Livejournal.

Solicit criticism, and don’t squirm when you get it. You need it. You also need to learn how to face rejection. As long as you strive to improve yourself, you have nothing to fear. They only reject you until you get Good. You get Good by asking people what makes your work Not Good and then trying to improve. Don’t let vanity hold you back, because you’ll always have a long way to go. Learn to love the process, love learning, love improvement. If you like those things, then criticism will be a boon, and rejection will fall in the face of your determination!

Repeat “chin up, head down” as a mantra. Be proud of your work, but don’t be a prima donna. Don’t be humble, either. Nobody likes a whiny artist, especially if you draw better to those you whine to. It’s a fine line to walk. Trying to imagine holding your chin up while holding your head down is a great way to visualize it.

When you do get recognition, any kind or amount of recognition, do not surrender to external validation or self absorption. Only die-hard fans love someone with their heads up their own asses. Celebrities can become jerks when they have so many sycophants that they don’t feel the need to appeal to anyone but themselves anymore. Sycophants aren’t real friends.

Don’t react to internet trolls. Ignore them or laugh at or with them. Say nothing to or about them. Like small children and lame celebrities, they like the external validation that comes with any kind of attention.

Remember that just because you are friends with an editor/publisher doesn’t mean that they have your best interests at heart. Never be afraid to haggle about a contract or ask for clarification.

Make friends.

Sleep well. Don’t stress out.

New York Comic-Con: View from Friends of Lulu

April 24th, 2008

NYCC is over, and we are completely worn out– but not too worn out to take care of business, namely thanking our wonderful panelists, and volunteers who helped make it all possible!

Our table was constantly abuzz with people interested in finding out more from Friends of Lulu, what our organization does and what it works to accomplish; which is primarily the uniting of women and comics.

For those who may want a refresher, I’ll give the spiel briefly: Friends of Lulu is a national nonprofit organization geared towards bringing women and comics together. We do that by annually hosting the Lulu Awards, the only awards (at least, that I’m aware of!) that seek to recognize the work of women in the comics industry. We also produce graphic novel anthologies to spread the work of emerging women artists and writers. Lastly, but most important of all, we work to unify women and men across the country that share our vision. We have a quarterly newsletter, a website active with news and interviews of women in the industry, and are present at as many conventions as we can to create a space for our members to spread their material, meet with other members, and participate with the direction of the organization.

We are did all that and more at New York Comic-Con this year! Nominations are now open for the Lulu Awards. You don’t have to be a member to nominate your favorite female artist/writer/editor! You do have to be a member to vote- so consider joining. But regardless, please participate! We want as wide a pool of female creators to choose from for our Lulu Awards.

We had many artists stop by our table for an hour of signing- all from the Girls’ Guide to Guys’ Stuff. I regret to say I snapped photos of just a couple- but here they are!

Women in Comics Panel at NYCC

Friday was the Women in Comics panel with Jennifer Grünwald, Shelly Bond, Becky Cloonan, Gail Simone, Heidi MacDonald, Karen Green, and moderator Abby Denson. This was hands down the best panel I’ve ever seen whose subject was “Women in Comics” which is, as Heidi pointed out, a circa 1987 title name. It’s true that we’re at the point now where rather than trying to point out the ‘oddity’ that being a woman in the comics industry is, we should be focusing on the work those women create- not how it ranks against the men in the industry. I agree, and I hope in the future Friends of Lulu can organize a panel that reflects that focus. The only trouble is, I’m stuck for panel title ideas. If you’ve got a good idea for a panel name that avoids the all-too-familiar ring of “Women in Comics”, let us know!

Back to the panel, we will soon have audio courtesy of Girl-Wonder.org.

What I loved about this panel was the direct line of questioning that Abby approached her moderating duties with. I’m sure the women on this panel have all seen their work spoken of in terms of how their gender relates to what they do; and all too often the line of reasoning follows like this- they are women, therefore their work must be in some way feminist, and feminism equals man-hating, therefore these women are ready to hate men and men’s opinions. It was delightful to hear these women speak about what they think feminism is, how feminism is (and isn’t!) reflected in their work, and to see the pride these women take in the extraordinary effort they have made in bringing good comic stories to the public.

Nearing the end in the Q&A portion of the panel, an audience member asked how to write female characters without being shunned. Ms. Green immediately recommended reading Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, and though that probably flew in the face of the interests of the audience at the time, I believe it bears repeating. I’d also like to add My Antonia by Willa Cather, which has the bonus of being a book written by a woman about a woman from the perspective of a man- if you can follow that. It just goes to show that with the right observation, you don’t have to be your subject to write about your subject!

Saturday was a full day of spreading the love of comics, with volunteers and signers at the Friends of Lulu table.

Sunday, Valerie and I were interviewed by Comixology about Friends of Lulu and the exciting things we have planned for this year, so take a look on their site- our podcast interview should be up Thursday!

Comics for Girls panel at NYCC

Sunday was also our Comics for Girls Panel, featuring Christine Norrie, Raina Telgemeier, Buzz Dixon, Allison Barrows, Jimmy Gownley, Barbara Slate, and Mike Pellerito. I am constantly pleased by how open and encouraging people are in this corner of the comics industry. People who make comics for kids, and for girls specifically, are really a kind bunch that want to see more great material out on the shelves for all to enjoy. Best of all, a rousing Q&A session was had as parents in the crowd asked for recommendations on what their daughters should read. Top of the list? Yotsuba!, The Baby-Sitters Club, Serenity, Amelia Rules, WJHC, and of course Archie (go Betty!). The emphasis that the panelists wished to place was on girl characters being empowered- dealing with interactions with other characters, the emotional impact of their relationships, and the actions the main character took as a part of their story arcs. It is tremendously inspiring to see all of these creators gung-ho for expanding the literature available so girls today can be spoken to directly.

Walking back from the Comics for Girls Panel Valerie and I are stopped by Russell Burlingame, a Comic Related columnist and Special Projects Editor at Greg Palast Investigations, who needs a photo for a piece on gender in comics. I’m only too happy to oblige in my Superman t-Shirt and this is the result:

Marion and Russell Armwrestling

Thanks Russell, and way to go on the photo, Valerie!

That wraps up my words on New York Comic-Con, let’s move on to the Lulu Awards!

Lulu Awards: Nominations are open!

You don’t have to be a member to nominate!
You don’t have to be female to nominate!
Heck, you don’t even have to like us to nominate!
But you do need to know of a female comic creator that you want
to see recognized for her hard work in this industry.

Nominations close on May 14th, 2008. Nominate early, nominate often, spread the news- there’s plenty of people out there who deserve an award!

New Comics! April 23, 2008

April 22nd, 2008

There are only a couple of manga that I am actively following right now, aside from the Shojo Beat titles I covered last week, and After School Nightmare is one of them. Not only is Nightmare pretty to look at, but it also has a heck of a storyline to it. As publisher Go! Comic puts it, “Like most teenagers, Mashiro Ichijo has a secret. But Mashiro’s secret is that he’s neither fully male nor female! So far, Mashiro’s been able to live his life as a boy, but all this changes when he’s informed of a new class he must take in order to graduate from his elite prep school. To pass, he must find the ‘Key’ …and the only way to find it is to enter into a nightmare world where his body and soul are put at the mercy of the worst kind of enemies: his classmates!”

At the core of After School Nightmare is the question of what makes a girl a girl and a boy a boy, and whether or not you should let your gender define who you are and who you should love. Mashiro faces the constant battle of having a female’s body from the waist down — watching him P.M.S. gives me the giggles for some reason — but the heart of a man as he tries to decide which of his love interests he really likes. The male? Or the female? There’s also the theme of letting others see who you are on the inside. In the “nightmares” Mashiro and his classmates face in their “class”, they each take on a form that reflects the true nature of their soul — whether they like it or not. It’s a series that has led me to question gender roles and made me wonder what I would look like in the nightmares of After School Nightmare.

And, the story comes in a very beautiful package. The faux-watercolor covers are breathtaking in their pastel tones, and the interior line work is very nice as well. Although their is something distinctively girly about the whole look of Nightmare, it’s a story that I’m sure the guys could indulge in as well. I highly recommend picking up After School Nightmare, starting with volume one and leading up to this week’s release of volume seven.
